Laban for Actors Workshops

Two day Laban for Actors

Intensive Introductory Workshop

Have you heard of Laban, but haven’t ever had the chance to delve into it? Are you looking for a way in, a tangible process from which you can create a myriad of characters or are you just curious about the body and the way we move? If so, this Laban intensive is for you!

Led by Jonathan D’Young, you’ll be taken through practical and playful explorations that will enable you to understand your own movement habits as well as give you the tools to be able to make choices, that can help you transform to become someone or something else.

  • You will find out how Space, Weight & Time can be combined to create eight specific ways of moving: the Efforts.
  • You will gain an in depth experience of the discovery process which can be applied to all efforts, and get the opportunity to play with effort archetypal characters in improvisations, that will show the potential of Laban.

Jonathan is the Co-Artistic Director of NMT Automatics and has over 20 years’ experience in the industry, as an actor, movement practitioner and creative. Originally trained at Middlesex University under the tutelage of John Wright (Trestle & Told by an idiot), he completed a Masters in Movement: Directing and Teaching at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2019. He has since taught at Rose Bruford, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, The University of West London, The School (formally the Poor School), and ArtsEd.

Having trained under both Vanessa Ewan and Kate Sagovsky, who wrote the book ‘Laban’s Efforts in Action: A Movement Handbook for Actors’, his method mixes Vanessa’s extensive process for working with Laban’s Efforts, with a rhythmical and actor focused approach. Demystifying and making clear the relevance for the actor and anybody wishing to enhance their physical capabilities.

‘Jonathan is a kind and encouraging tutor, whilst being thorough in his teaching and incredibly knowledgeable in his field. I’ve learnt a lot from him in terms of Laban movement analysis as well as Animal studies.’ Tom

‘Working with Jonathan in Animal Studies and Laban has transformed my work as an actor. Approaching character work through this lens has gotten me out of my head, heightened my presence in scenes and allowed me to create embodied, three-dimensional characters.

Jonathan is a wonderful teacher and a master at his craft. He approaches teaching with creativity and joy and creates a great environment for learning.’ Cathy

‘Jonathan has been an inspiring influence for the development of my movement repertoire and confidence as an actor. Firstly with his teachings of the Laban efforts he has helped me understand the fundamental concepts of grounding and freedom as I act through my body. Jonathan is a very good teacher with a clear teaching method often linked to acting skills and improvisation, and which allows enough time to explore and develop a certain skill.

Jonathan’s expertise in both animal studies and Laban Movement Analysis shines through in his dynamic teaching style and thoughtful curriculum design. Jonathan’s movement classes offered a refreshing and enlightening perspective that inspired us to move with intention, creativity, and embodied presence. It has been fantastic working with him.’ Tara
